Truth bomb: Chemotherapy is HARD but my week off is HARDER!

I have chemo for 2 Wednesdays in a row And then I get a week off. Chemo weeks are Predictable! I know where I have to go, what I need to do and who is looking after my kids. I get bloods done the day before and then on chemo day I rock up, sit in a chair and allow my body to drink up. I know that I'm tired when I leave because the pre meds haven't worn off yet. I know that I'm often wired that night and the next day because of all the steroids. I know that day 3 post chemo is usually my 'off day', I feel a little rubbish.

My week off.... Unpredictable! I don't know how I'm going to wake up each morning. I have new side effects after each cycle and my hair sheds more in these in-between weeks. I have heaps of appointments, more supplements to take and lots of detoxing to do. It's in my off week that I need to push through, show up and get shit done. But it's also the week where my body is screaming for rest. Not the type of rest that sleep fixes.

People often think that chemo is the worst part of cancer... But it's only one part.

Starting chemotherapy is scary! It's confronting and lonely.
We see movies, we see stories, we know people and a cancer diagnosis throws you.

I am now half way through chemotherapy treatment (6 rounds in) and this is what I wish I knew....

Losing hair definitely is a reality and it is soul crushing. It's not about vanity, it's so much deeper. Hair loss will normally begin at the 3 week mark. Sometimes later. Even with preventative measures. The type of chemo makes a difference as well as so many other factors. I have lost hair, a lot of hair but it has been gradual.

Side effects are crazy! Different for everyone! Some are so random, like a swollen tongue... Other generic, like nausea. I won't like the first cycle completely knocked me... But we have found a balance with dosage and I'm managing ok. Some days I feel (dare I say) normal. Other days I do want to vomit, I have reflux and can't eat a thing. Everyday is different and every cycle is different.

I don't look sick, at least I don't think I do. Yes, I've lost weight. Eating through treatment just isn't the same. Taste changes!

Cancer treatment isn't a one shoe fits all, despite the fact that is exactly how it is prescribed and administered.
